EdTech 543: Initial Thoughts on Social Media

  • What are your initial reactions about joining these social networks for use in this course?
    • Social media can be such a beneficial tool for the classroom if implemented effectively and thoughtfully. Social media is something that most students are very familiar with and intrigued by. In my past experiences of observation, it has seemed as though using it for assignments and projects automatically increases their engagement and motivation levels, making them excited about learning. I am not as familiar with the use of Diigo or Twitter and therefore, I look forward to learning more about them in EdTech 543.
  • What is your experience in using social media for your own professional development?
    • I have utilized social media outlets such as Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat in the past as tools for collaboration with other teachers. They are excellent for sharing information, both for visual and auditory purposes.
  • What is your experience in using social media as an instructional strategy in your learning environment?
    • I have very little experience implementing social media as an instructional strategy in my junior high mathematics classroom. This is exactly why I chose to take this elective course! I am very excited to learn!
  • What are your expectations for this course?
    • I am hopeful that this course will provide me with more confidence in utilizing social media outlets to strengthen my students’ learning experiences. I feel that there is so much potential for social media to really benefit students in the classroom, but I also feel that if it is not used effectively and thoughtfully, it could do just the opposite. I am definitely weary about using it and am looking forward to learning how it can be incorporated with the students’ best interests in mind.
